Frequently asked questions
What does Sweep actually do?
Sweep connects to your repository and continuously monitors your open pull requests. Safe, routine PRs — dependency bumps, lint fixes, documentation updates — are merged automatically. Risky changes are blocked and flagged for human review. Your backlog shrinks without you touching it.
How does Sweep decide what is safe to merge?
Sweep analyzes pull request diffs, file changes, commit type and repository context to determine risk. Low-risk changes such as dependency bumps, documentation updates, configuration edits and small fixes can be merged automatically. Higher-risk changes are flagged for human review so your team always stays in control.
Will Sweep ever break my main branch?
No. Sweep never force-pushes, never bypasses required status checks, and never merges a PR that fails CI. It also respects every branch protection rule already configured in your repository. If it can't be sure, it doesn't merge.
Does Sweep read or store my code?
Sweep reads pull request metadata and diffs only to evaluate merge safety. It does not store, index, or train on your source code. It never accesses secrets, environment files, or credentials.
How long does setup take?
About 2 minutes. Connect your GitHub account, select a repository, and Sweep starts monitoring immediately. No YAML configuration required to get started — rules can be refined later.
How is Sweep different from Gate?
Sweep is an execution engine — it automatically merges safe pull requests and flags risky ones. Gate is a governance layer — it helps you define objectives, monitor signals, classify work, and generate plans. Sweep moves work forward. Gate decides what should move. They're complementary, not competing.
Which platforms does Sweep support?
GitHub is fully supported today. GitLab support is in private beta. If you need GitLab access, reach out.
